New York Eats 2014: Halal Chicken Rice

Hello from chilly New York!

It's our first day back here in the Big Apple and at the top of our priority list is to get some Chicken Rice from the Halal Guys. "Manhattan is home to many smells, but perhaps the most delicious is the chicken-y, savory scent that emanates from from the city's countless halal carts. Serving lunch to late-night, these carts dish up a container full of chicken rice that tastes like nothing else, crave-worthy and totally singular." - Serious Eats.

The line today, Dec 16.

This was our go-to meal when we were still living here in the city. This was best enjoyed after going out at night or during the winter season where you'd have to line up and freeze your butt out just to get some! It just made it more exciting because you had to work and line up for it.

So what is Halal Chicken Rice?

It's a platter of chopped chicken thighs that are marinated with oregano, lemon and coriander that is served over some yellow (turmeric) rice. They also top it with some slices of pita and iceberg lettuce. But the real winner is their super secret white sauce that is sweet, tangy, sour and just plain awesome. I still can't figure out if it's yogurt, sourcream, mayonnaise...all i know is that it's so damn good! And I have made it part of my life mission to someday replicate this super secret mystery sauce.

Sloppy and Authentic just the way we want it.

The main cart is located on 53rd and 6th Ave during weekday evenings (7pm-4am) and weekends, across from the Hilton Hotel.
A second cart is located across the street from the original cart, on the south-east corner of 6th Avenue and 53rd Street and is open both during the daytime and at night.
A third cart exists on the south-west corner of 53rd Street and 7th Avenue, and begins serving food at lunch time.

First things first.
The hubby J and I at the 53rd and 6th Halal Cart.

cheers,
Pattie
